YKK Award winner at ITS 201214 August 2012
The International Talent Support took place on the 13th and 14th of July 2012, in Trieste, Italy. The new generation of young design talents from around the world gathered at the final event of the 11th annual showcase and competition for young designers. The YKK Award for ITS Accessories was given to an author of a novel concept of ‘fire lasted’ shoes Benjamin John Hall.
YKK has been the main sponsor of ITS Accessories for the last 8 years. The company awarded the prize of 10,000 Euro and the future support for the designer who created the most impressive piece of art by using YKK fastening products in a truly innovative way.
All the Accessories finalists submitted works of a very high standard and the jury had an extremely difficult choice to make. However after much thought YKK decided to give the award to Mr Benjamin John Hall.
He brought a completely innovative technique to shoe lasting process. Classical way of lasting is to stretch the upper leather over the last solid form that simulates foot shape. The next step involves attaching it to the insole rib to make shoe shape. Benjamin modified this process by setting fire to the upper leather and took the advantage of the heat-shrinkable nature of the leather. His unconventional technique impressed all the jury members and the guests. Benjamin has used YKK EXCELLA® zippers made with fire resistant materials which can preserve normal fastening function even after burning.
YKK cooperates with Benjamin on a new project aiming to create a promotional advertising in YKK New Breed microsite on DazedDigital.com, the website of Dazed and Confused magazine.
We are looking forward to continued success of Benjamin and all other ITS 2012 award winners in creative fields around the world.
