YKK wins OEKO-TEX® Sustainability Award 2013

Contributing to a sustainable society has long been a core principle of the leading global   fastening supplier. Mr Tadao Yoshida, the visionary founder of Yoshida Kogyo                  Kabushikigaisha (YKK), who built his company on the principle that ‘no one prospers unless he  renders benefit to others’, would be tremendously proud to have known that YKK’s efforts have been recognised by the OEKO-TEX® panel of experts.

At the award ceremony in June, OEKO-TEX® introduced YKK Corporation as the winner of the Sustainability Award 2013 in the category Quality Management, for its outstanding achievements with regard to human-ecologically optimised textiles and sustainable           production.

“YKK Corporation is setting standards worldwide by striving for perfection and maximum quality”, says the award jury. “The meticulous quality assurance within the company        guarantees products of consistently high quality, regardless of the production location. This  is based on a thoroughly vertical production system where everything from raw materials to finished products is manufactured in-house. Even the machines are developed within the company”. The jury recognises that this approach ensures the highest quality standards.  Furthermore they point out that continuous investment into replacement and further           development in close cooperation with customers is related to these factors.

“The extent of YKK’s internal and external quality management and sustainability activities is not always well understood”, says Johnny de Boer, a Marketing Manager at YKK in Europe. “YKK’s approach is not based on mere ‘compliance with’, but rather on ‘continuous            improvement of’ its systems. We are a proactive company when it comes to sustainability and are extremely proud of the recognition by the OEKO-TEX® panel.”

Celebrating its 20th Anniversary in 2012, the International OEKO-TEX® Association,      headquartered in Zurich, Switzerland, was founded by the Austrian Textile Research          Institute and the German Hohenstein Research Institutes. Currently, its membership         includes 15 independent textile research and testing institutes with 67 offices in 60 countries. To date, nearly 120,000 OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certificates have been issued - with more than 11,000 issued per year - and 9,500 companies in 90 countries are working with OEKO-TEX® to ensure that their products are tested for potentially harmful substances.

YKK has been working with OEKO-TEX® since 1993.
